Swift Water
Individual Equipment Overview |
| There are several
important factors to look at when determining what type of equipment
individual rescuers will need during swift water operations. The
most important factor is air and water temperature. |
| 1 |
Head Protection |
A key safety item that covers a
broad range of materials and cost. |
| 2 |
Exposure Protection |
Determining the correct exposure for
the conditions is a key factor. |
| 3 |
Personal Flotation Device |
Another key safety item.
Flotation and fit for comfort and ease of swimming |
| 4 |
Gloves |
Depending on conditions a good work
glove or for colder water a neoprene work glove. |
| 5 |
Boots |
Rugged sturdy boots which provide
support while walking on sometimes difficult terrain. Boots must
also provide warmth for the rescuer and allow for swimming. |
| 6 |
Fins |
Something functional and low
profile. Scuba fins may not be a suitable selection for swift
water. |
| 7 |
Throw Bag |
NFPA recommendation for line length,
size and material would be a good place to start. |
